St. Cloud’s Trevor Foshee, a small player with a big game, plays at the Class 3A state tennis tournament Monday at Lake Brantley High.

Joining him from Osceola County are Celebration’s No. 1 doubles duo of Tyler Young and Richard Cruz.

They qualified for the state meet by winning district championships at Melbourne two weeks ago.

Foshee, 5-7, is only 14 and in his freshman season.

He dropped only one game at the district tournament and defeated Viera’s Felix Alsher, 6-0, 6-0, for the championship.

“The thing about him is that he stays the same. Most kids, after they hit the sixth ball, want to kill it and get all tensed up and flatten it out, but he just keeps hitting the ball back the same way, and that’s great,” St. Cloud Coach Dallas Kelsey said. “He’s pretty excited. He’s ready to go.”

Foshee, who plays Super 16 juniors tournament around the country, was rarely challenged while going unbeaten during the regular season and winning the Orange Belt Conference No. 1 singles championship.

He said he is prepared to take on the better players he will see next week at Lake Brantley High.

“Yeah, I’ve already seen a lot of the good players in high school at the juniors tournaments,” he said.

Young and Cruz won a close match for the district championship over Viera’s Alscher and Tristan Mignogna, 7-5, 6-4.

Celebration’s girls lost to Stuart Martin County, 7-0, Tuesday in the first round of the regional tournament.

Celebration’s last appearance at the state tournament came in 2008 when William Wold won the district singles championship.
