Osceola High is the county’s boys and girls water polo champion after sweeping Gateway last week at the Osceola County YMCA.

The Kowboys won 17-2, while the Lady Kowboys had a tougher match against the Panthers before prevailing, 6-4. The match was postponed because of thunderstorms March 31.

Michael Pierson had six steals for Osceola,  4-13. Daniel Wade led the team in scoring.

Josh Gomez scored both Gateway goals as the Panthers slipped to 2-13.

Amber Hammock had four steals for the Osceola’s girls, 7-9, and Melissa Morgan scored three times for  Gateway, 9-6.

Neither Gateway nor Osceola qualified for the District 3 tournament next week. The top four teams in the district qualify.

Osceola girls coach Rennie Adams said her team made progress this season.

“It is pretty amazing how far they have come, although their record does not reflect their accomplishments,” Adams said. “We have a competitive district, most of the teams play year round. Most of our girls letter in a variety of things. Six of our 14 letter in three sports. And, that’s not even including band, chorus and academic achievements. Year around really isn’t an option.”

Both teams wrap up their regular season schedules today and Friday. Gateway plays host to Ocoee today and Lyman Friday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. Osceola will host Winter Springs Friday at 5 p.m.
