Liberty earned its first-ever regular-season win over Osceola Tuesday with a 4-3 District 6A-5 victory.

The Chargers (6-9) took a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning on catcher Johnny Carraballo’s three-run home run. After the Kowboys (11-3) made it 4-3 on Peter Calilao’s RBI single in the fifth, Johnny Maslanka took the mound and got out of a bases-loaded jam, then shut the door in the sixth and seventh innings.

In the final frame, Calilao coaxed a one-out walk, then Dylan Dillard lined a ball back at Maslanka, who deflected the ball to Yariel Alvarez. The second baseman played the carom perfectly and started a game-ending double play.

Liberty Coach Nick Philpot took over this year from Scott Birchler — who now coaches Osceola — so the game had added juice for his players, Philpot said.

“It’s fun to win here period, but with that whole back story, the kids wanted it that much more. Scott made me a better coach,” he said. “I was really pacing that last inning. All of our losses but one have been by three runs or less, and it’s been errors that hurt us. That’s why seeing that double play at the end was great.”

The District 5A-5 win was the first game in a two-week, five-game stretch of 5A-5 contests for the Chargers.

The Kowboys were scheduled to play Celebration on Wednesday; a win would have moved OHS to 4-0 in the OBC stand
