The Kissimmee Police Department through March 31 will be reminding drivers to buckle their seat belts.

The KPD Traffic Enforcement Unit will be spearheading the campaign that began Tuesday and will run through the end of the month. The campaign will include message board signs throughout the city reminding motorists to use their seat belts, roving enforcement and checkpoints at local schools.

Officers are working closely with Osceola High School and Valencia Community College to get more seat belt use by students.

Seat belt violations are a primary offense, meaning a motorist can be pulled over by an officer for simply not wearing one. The fine for not wearing a seat belt is $116 and the fine for not using a child restraint is $166 and includes three points on a driver license.

“Wearing your seat belt is a quick decision that can save your life,” KPD Chief Fran Iwanski said. “Kissimmee police officers want to remind motorist to buckle up every trip, every time – it’s the law.”
