Although the softball season is barely one-third over, Harmony already has taken command in 4A District 6, and Osceola can take a huge step toward landing the top seed at the 5A-5 tournament if it can beat Polk County power Lake Wales today at 7:30 p.m. at Coffey Field. Harmony, 6-2, has beaten its top three district rivals, St. Cloud, Eustis and Tavares, during a six-game winning streak. The Lady Longhorns edged Tavares, the defending district champion, 1-0, in nine innings Feb. 24 as pitcher Breann Vanderzyl allowed just three hits and allowed only two runners to reach scoring position.
Lauren Harris doubled home Brianne Kimura for the winning run. Both are sophomores.
The Longhorns, 5-0 in the district, visit Celebration today at 7 p.m. for another district contest. Harmony visits Eustis Tuesday.
Osceola was 6-1 and 3-1 after 12-1 win Tuesday at Liberty. The Lady Kowboys host Lake Wales, the defending district champion and a state final four team two seasons ago, today at 7:30 p.m. Lake Wales won the first meeting two weeks ago, 5-3.
Osceola will host Sebring Friday at 8 p.m. for another 5A-5 meeting.
Osceola is scheduled to play its next seven games at Coffey Field, but the team must make up last Friday’s district game at Winter Haven, which was postponed because the Blue Devils were playing at the girls state basketball tournament.
St. Cloud, 5-3, has a big district contest today when it welcomes Eustis at 7 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs, 3-2 in the district, beat Celebration, 11-1, Thursday.
Madison Roberts, Breanna Benge, KaDeisha McCowen, Sam Gale and Emily Blackmore all contributed at the plate.
Pitcher Sam Gale, who signed to Florida Southern College in November, has a 0.93 ERA and 58 strikeouts.
St. Cloud has another tough assignment Friday when Melbourne visits St. Cloud at 7 p.m.
The Bulldogs visit Gateway Tuesday at 4 p.m.
