Lane switch on Narcoossee Road; lane closures on Bill Beck Boulevard

Due to the ongoing, multi-phase construction of Narcoossee Road, the contractor has moved traffic onto new pavement between 10th Street and Harkley Runyan Road.

Motorists are urged to use caution when approaching this area, county officials stated in a press release. There will be directional signs, as well as uneven pavement at the temporary traffic transition switch from the west side to the east side of Narcoossee Road, north of Lillian Road. Motorists also are reminded to follow the posted speed limit, which has been reduced from 55 mph to 40 mph.

Narcoossee Road is a planned four-phase project that started Sept. 15, 2008, with an expected completion date of July 2012. The project consists of four 11-foot travel lanes, two 4-foot bicycle lanes, depressed medians and sidewalks for both sides of the road. The scope of the project encompasses Narcoossee Road between U.S. Highway 192 and Boggy Creek Road, for a total of 7.3 miles.

The county also announced that crews will be milling and resurfacing a section of Bill Beck Boulevard beginning Monday and extending through Friday, from Boggy Creek Road south to U.S. Highway 192, according to an Osceola County press release.

Work will be nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Message boards are scheduled to be in place by Wednesday to advise residents of the upcoming project.

Motorists are urged to use caution when approaching these areas, as there will be temporary lane closures, but no road closures. Traffic delays can be expected and schedules could vary according to weather and equipment-related issues.

Two more in 2012 elections

Osceola County Clerk of Court Malcom W. Thompson, Kissimmee, has filed for re-election.

Thompson, a Democrat, is currently in his first four-year term. Thompson filed earlier this week, and he is the only candidate for the office so far.

Jaime Matos last week filed to run for seat 3 in the non-partisan city of Kissimmee Commission race. Jerry Gemskie, who currently holds this seat, cannot seek re-election due to term limits. Gemskie, however, is running in the Osceola County Commission district 1 race as a Republican.

Candidates in Kissimmee run citywide; the municipal election coincides with the Florida state primary and is followed up with a run-off in November, if needed.
