About 300 of the state’s best female high school weightlifters will convene at the Kissimmee Civic Center today at 10:30 a.m. for the state tournament.
Six Osceola County lifters will be among those vying for state championships.
Sectional champion, and 2009 state champion, Zanquina Ellison, of Osceola High, leads the local lifters. Ellison is the top-seed in the 129-pound wight class after lifting 350 total pounds at the sectional tournament at Timber Creek High Jan. 26.
“She’s about 40 pounds ahead of second place. She’ll have to mess up pretty bad not to win,” Osceola Coach Eric Pinellas said.
Ellison’s teammate, four-time state track champion Tynia Gaither, should place among the top three at 119 pounds, Pinellas said.
“She’ll have her work cut out against the top two girls,” he said.
Gaither lifted 280 pounds at the sectional.
Poinciana’s Kandra Anderson won the 183-pound sectional championship with a lifts of 170-160-330, and Coach Joel Campbell predicts that Anderson should have a spot on the medal stand today.
Two St. Cloud lifters advanced by placing second at the sectional meet: Iliana Bonilla qualified at 101 pounds with a lift of 220 pounds and Annie Barberi lifted 245 pounds to qualify at 110 pounds.
Harmony’s Melissa Albert was second at 139 pounds, lifting 295 pounds.
St. Cloud Coach Lonnie Beckel and Harmony Coach Jerrad Butler helped to plan for the state tournament.
“There’s a lot of space on the floor, and things seem to be thought out pretty well,” Beckel said. “It’s going to be interesting to see how it goes.”
Admission is $8; parking is $5.

Question of the Week

Are the theme park tickets too expensive these days?
