Gale in no-hitter

St. Cloud High pitcher Samantha Gale got the 2011 softball season off in style Monday when she threw a no-hitter against Liberty at St. Cloud High in a 12-0 victory.

“That (no-hitter) is one of many. I can’t keep track anymore,” Coach Mike Gale, the pitcher’s father said. “We played well. Freshman Ka Deisha McCowan is going to be special for us, three hits and four RBI. Lacey Makinson did an awesome job behind the plate.”

Sam Gale will play at Florida Southern College. St. Cloud will host Lake Wales Monday at 7 p.m.

Mendez no-hitter

Osceola High pitcher Sasha Mendez threw a no-hitter in 10-0 victory over Liberty Tuesday in the Lady Kowboys softball season opener.

The team dedicated its field in honor of Coach George Coffey in a ceremony Friday before a game against Trinity Prep.

Mid Florida scholars

Several Harmony Youth Football players and cheerleaders have made the All Mid Florida Conference First Team  Scholars.

The athletes were recognized for excelling in academics and rank among the top 2 percent of all Mid-Florida Associations. They will attend a banquet and be honored at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort today.

They also are eligible to become All-Americans by the National Pop Warner Association.

They are: Audrey Marriage, Brianna Marriage, Kirkland Filbert, Christopher Dispensa, Brannen Demeter, Lukas Hachey, Jacob Ippolito, Kylie House, Hannah Montgomery, Amber Pugh, Caroline Tarpley and Farrah Kuronnen.

Storm cheer 2nd

The Celebration competitive cheer team placed second at the FHSAA State Competitive Cheerleading finals Friday at the Silver Spurs Arena.

The Storm were the runners-up to Indian Rocks Christian School in the Class A medium varsity class.

Liberty High placed eighth at the state meet.

SC mens hoops

The St. Cloud Parks and Recreation 5-on-5 spring basketball league for men ages 18 and up begins March 15. Team packets are available for pickup at the St. Cloud Civic Center.

Games will be played Tuesdays at 7 p.m. The maximum number of players per team is 10.

All team rosters and payments are due by March 4. Cost per team is $250.

Storm tennis wins

Celebration won a rain-shortened tennis match against Poinciana Thursday, 4-0.

Tyler Young (No. 1), Richard Cruz (No. 2), Jacob Glodde (No. 3) and Luis Penagos (No. 4) won their boys singles matches.

The No. 5 singles and both doubles matches were rained out.

The Celebration girls won 7-0 over Poinciana. Lexi Stephan (No. 1), Anu Gupta (No. 2) and Yuka Moribe (No. 3) won by 6-0, 6-0 scores. PHS forfeited four matches.
