Kissimmee Police Department’s traffic enforcement unit and Radio Disney will be giving away bicycle helmets at three Kissimmee elementary schools.
During the first part of the school year, the traffic enforcement unit noticed a decline in children wearing bicycle helmets while traveling to and from school, according to a department press release.
The unit worked with Kissimmee elementary schools to identify which schools and grades were in the greatest need for helmets. Kissimmee police will work with Radio Disney and Walt Disney World Community Relations to help provide bicycle helmets to the identified schools.
Radio Disney provided a $5,000 Minnie Grant through Disney Worldwide Outreach and Walt Disney World Community Relations provided $1,760 to purchase the needed helmets.
The bicycle helmets will be given away at the schools during a bicycle safety event. The Kissimmee Police Department’s traffic enforcement unit will be assisting with properly fitting the helmets to the children and Radio Disney will be providing stickers and other items for them to decorate their helmets.
The K9 unit will be attending and providing obedience demonstrations for the children and Radio Disney’s VoluntEARS will be playing a special game of Simon Says that will teach the children their bike hand signals.
“We are very excited to be partnering with Radio Disney on these events,” Chief Fran Iwanski said. “Adding Disney fun to important topics like bicycle safety may encourage children to wear their bike helmets more often.”
The event schedules are:
• Friday at Flora Ridge Elementary: fifth-grade (11:20 a.m.-12:15 p.m.); fourth-grade  (12:15-1:10 p.m.); third-grade (1:40-2:35 p.m.)
• Friday Feb. 4, at Mill Creek Elementary – fourth-grade (9:30-10:15 a.m.); fifth-grade (10:15-11 a.m.); third-grade (11-11:45 a.m.)
