Oviedo High Coach Ed Kershner has an opportunity Wednesday to make history when his team plays Osceola at 1 p.m. at the Great Florida Shootout at the Silver Spurs Arena.

Kershner Tuesday tied late Stuart Martin County Coach Don Wallen’s record of 760 career wins when the Lions beat Bartow, 53-38.

Kershner, who led Osceola to the 1983 state championship with a 37-0 record, founded the Shootout in 1981, his second season at OHS.

The Kowboys advanced in the consolation bracket with a 74-59 win over Bishop Verot Tuesday.

Oviedo lost to Plantation American Heritage Monday in the opening round. Osceola fell to Bishop McNamara, Maryland.

The winner of today’s game advances to the consolation championship game Thursday at 4 p.m.

Lake Highland Prep of Orlando stunned favored Hoover, Calif. Tuesday, 55-48, to advance to the tournament semifinal round today. Hoover’s 6-9 forward Angel Chol, is one of the most recruited college prospects in the nation.

Other winners in the championship bracket Tuesday were Bishop McNamara over Orlando Dr. Phillips, 54-51; Ball High of Galveston, Texas over American Heritage, 64-45 and Melbourne Holy Trinity over Wekiva, 64-42.

Ball High will play Bishop McNamara at 7 p.m. and Lake Highland, coached by former Orlando Magic player Jeff Turner, will meet Holy Trinity at 8:30 p.m. The winners advance to the championship game Thursday at 8:30 p.m.

Admission is $10, $5 for students.
