For Kissimmee Police Department Administrative Director Dave Herrman, everyday on the job is a new challenge. It's possible that constant versatility recently earned him the 2010 city of Kissimmee employee of the year award.

Herrman, a 14-year employee with the police department, was one of the city’s 12 employees of the month recipients. He accepted that honor in March.

A group of about eight employees make up the employee of the month committee which decides who is the most deserving at the end of the year.

“Obviously, it's quite an honor to be selected by your peers,” Herrman said.

A city worker is not named employee of the month by city administrators, but by the peers in his or her department

For Herrman, no two days are alike. He meets with different department staff in the city on a daily basis.

“It offers a lot of variety,” he said. “That's what I like about it. Any given day, I encounter a number of challenges.”

According to a city press release, Herrman earned the reputation for consistently meeting or exceeding expectations as it relates to any task he is assigned.

“He has effectively mastered time management, while balancing a large number of assignments,” the press release stated.

Among other duties, Herrman oversees the following: drafting monthly reports; monitoring credit card purchases; review/approval of travel and training expenditures; and involvement with the police department's budget and grant processes from start to finish.

“Dave’s knowledge in the financial arena makes him an invaluable asset,” the press release stated.

Herrman also has invested countless hours toward the monumental task of organizing the Department’s inventory reports, city officials said, which involves researching purchase orders from years past to update the inventory files.

“Even though Dave’s plate is quite full, he never hesitates to help someone in need of his assistance.  Dave is a reliable employee who does a stellar job for the city.  It is an honor to recognize him,” the press release stated.

Herrman could only speculate why he was the frontrunner.

“I just like to have a good working relationship with the different areas of the city,” he said.

For winning the award, Herrman won a commemorative plaque, a paid day off, an 8-by-10 portrait on display in City Hall, a $400 savings bond and a 5-by-7 portrait affixed to the 2010 Employee of the Month plaque.
