For the seventh consecutive year, the St. Cloud Police Department has offered the youngest residents of the city of St. Cloud the Shop with a Cop program.
Twenty-four children paired up with department volunteer police officers at St. Cloud’s Walmart-Mart Dec. 14. After their holiday shopping experience, they traveled to the St. Cloud Diner for a specially prepared dinner for the children, their parents and the SCPD volunteers.
“We’re so fortunate to have such a tight-knit community,” SCPD Community Outreach Officer Ron Caswell said. “What we have here is Walmart-Mart stores donating gift cards, volunteers putting in extra hours during the busy holiday season and the folks at St. Cloud Diner who graciously offered delicious meals at no charge. This is just one more way that our community makes a positive contribution to the city we live in.”
The Shop with a Cop program allows for police officers and SCPD staff to share Christmas with children and their families who may otherwise not experience a merry holiday season. The officers and the children shared time together in an unforgettable holiday shopping experience, with gift cards to buy gifts for themselves and family members. The children selected are recommended for participation in the program by their schools. The criteria for the children include:
• Must live within city limits
• Must be school-age children
• Must have a social or an economic need
