S.M.I.L.E.S. Learn and Serve students recently presented at the 17th Annual Florida Service Learning Institute on Nov. 16.
The goal of the institute was to help hundreds of students expand, improve and work together to sustain quality service learning in their schools and communities. Local, state and national service learning experts shared their ideas and insights. The Neptune Middle students presented a 90-minute workshop about S.M.I.L.E.S.
At the institute, deserving students received the President’s Volunteer Service Award, issued by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation on behalf of the President of the United States to recognize the best in the American spirit and to encourage all Americans to improve their communities through volunteer service and civic participation.
The following Neptune Middle School S.M.I.L.E.S students received the Gold Award for more than 100 hours of service: Maria Alessi, Nora Askew, Robert Butler, Jade Ching, Yesenia, Conde, Melissa Cuervo, Thasha Dorismond, Nicholas Dorsey, Deyaneira Erazo, Darby Huggins, Jacklyn Hurley, Marquise Jackson, Melissa LePoer, Rebecca Ouellette, Lamara Pope, Christina Santana, and Andrew Weathers.
The following Neptune Middle School S.M.I.L.E.S students received the Bronze award for 55 hours of volunteer/service learning participation: Jesus Adames, Arayna, Almanzar, Rebekah Batson, Alejandro Bermudez, Alejandro Bermudez-Medina, Lindsey Bishop, Justin Broughton, Eric Burns, Keyonna Ching, Adhleimar Cintron, Alexia Clayton, Sebastian Cobo, Blake Connell, Neishaly Coriano, Macy Foncannon, Ivan Garcia, Alejandro Gutierrez, Yairaliz Hernandez, Alicia Herrera, Chantelle Jamieson, Jacqueline Kyger, Joann Lee, Briana Linkous, Samantha Mandig, Marcus McCleery, Alec Mejias, Nashalie Melendez, Samuel Mercado, Lauren Morlock, Troy Parker, Jaime Parra, Stephannie Ramos, Gabriella Rivera, Yariel Rivera, Tiffani Rodriguez, Nelson Ross, Morgan Sacks, Miguel Santiago, Brianna Sherrill, Aubrey Simonson, Tyler Sorenson, Hailey Steuer, Baylee Sullivan, Nicholas Swan, Andrew Targia, David Tavarez, Harley Warga, Marlo Whaley and Cheyenne Wright.
"Neptune Middle has become a model school for utilizing service learning as a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility and strengthen communities," Superintendent Michael A. Grego said. "This type of instruction helps students master important curriculum content by supporting their making meaningful connections between what they are studying and its many real-world applications."
