In recognition of his outstanding efforts to enhance student achievement and foster partnerships through community outreach and family involvement, Matthew Phillips, former assistant principal at Neptune Elementary, has been selected as a state finalist for the Outstanding Assistant Principal Achievement Award by the Florida Department of Education.
Phillips is one of three individuals selected as finalists for the award that recognizes exemplary education leaders for their contributions to their schools and communities.
Phillips, currently the principal at Cypress Elementary, had a significant impact on learning during his three years as assistant principal at Neptune Elementary. His efforts to utilize and track data to monitor student progress with teachers on a regular basis improved student performance, which in part, resulted in a change of the school's grade from a C to an A.
Other accomplishments included the development of guidelines and procedures to assist teachers with the mainstreaming of autistic students; a successful CVS grant application, which resulted in a handicap-accessible Boundless Playground for all students at the school; and involvement in all aspects of school operations, curriculum and technology.
According to a press release, whether he took on the character of “Mr. Science” on morning an-nouncements or assumed the identity of “Captain Neptune” to encourage the students to do their best, Phillips showed that he is an instructional leader with a vision to accelerate learning for all students.
“I am extremely proud of Mr. Phillips and the outstanding leadership he gives every day as a school administrator in working with our teachers and students to boost achievement in the classroom,” Superintendent Michael A. Grego said.
The winner of the Florida Department of Education's Outstanding Assistant Principal Achievement Award will be announced at the Principal Summit in 2011.
