City of St. Cloud employees, along with local residents and volunteers, worked hard on the planning, preparation and development of a new project — the St. Cloud Urban Agricultural Program’s Community Garden.
To recognize everyone’s efforts and introduce the garden to the community, the city’s Parks and Recreation staff hosted a grand opening ceremony Dec. 1.
The first-introduced community garden in Osceola County is at 802 New York Ave. (on the corner of New York Avenue and 8th Street) and offers local residents an opportunity to work with friends, neighbors and city of St. Cloud employees.
“We are very proud to get this project under way now; it’s a very exciting time,” city of St. Cloud Beautification Manager Kimberly Duffy said. “This is a vegetable, flower and culinary herb combination garden. The site is perfect for this project because of its location having full sunlight and room for growth. Most importantly, this has been and will continue to be a community effort. We worked hard and will continue to work hard on maintaining this wonderful site.”
The garden will benefit and serve the entire community. It will provide recreational opportunities through gardening, a new sense of community, a connection to Mother Nature and improve the look of the neighborhood. The city provides containers, organic soil, seeds, all growing supplies and assistance and education from staff members; the participants provide care and maintenance of the containers and a swap harvest every 90 days. The contract garden plots provide 25 square feet to grow vegetables at a cost of $25 per season (two seasons minimum).
On-site staff hours (excluding New Year’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas):
• October-February: Monday through Friday from 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• March-September: Monday through Friday from 7 to 10 a.m. and 5 to 8 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
