A Kissimmee man was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse Wednesday after his girlfriend's 10-month-old infant was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Osceola County Sheriff's Office detectives arrested Luis Angel Guzman, 30, 1135 Cobblestone Circle, Kissimmee after the investigation began on Dec. 1. At about 12:26 a.m., deputies responded to an apartment in the Cobblestone Apartment Complex. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the mother of the infant who said her son was gasping for air and then went unresponsive. The child was taken to Osceola Regional Medical Center and later transported to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando with life-threatening injuries. He was at Arnold Palmer Hospital on life support at press time Friday.
Doctors said the infant had serious injuries including possible brain damage and fractured ribs that could not have been from an accident, Sheriff's Office reports said. The mother told deputies her son had been sick for several days and she took him on several occasions to the doctor, who had prescribed an antibiotic. She said she did not know her son was seriously ill nor did she abuse the child.
Detectives interviewed all of the family members and brought Guzman, the mother's boyfriend, in for questioning. He denied abusing the infant, but told investigators he playfully threw the infant several times and might have used excessive force on him, Sheriff's Office reports said. Based on the information and evidence, a warrant was issued for Guzman and he was booked into the Osceola County Jail Wednesday.
