The city of Kissimmee Parks and Recreation Department is hosting the third annual Santa Social.
This time-honored tradition will take place on Saturday, Dec. 11, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Kissimmee Civic Center.
Children will have an opportunity to visit with Santa and to tell him what they want for Christmas. Radio Disney also will be on hand to provide entertainment.
Holiday camp
The city of Kissimmee Parks and Recreation Department will host its holiday camp to coincide with the winter break observed by Osceola County schools.
The camp runs Dec. 20-22 and 27-29, with supervised care provided from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Children can be dropped off at the Oak Street Park Community Center to participate in the following field trips:
Dec. 20: Regal Cinemas – “Yogi Bear”; Dec. 21: Skate Reflections; Dec. 22: Gatorland; Dec. 27: Congo River Golf; Dec. 28: Wonder Works; Dec. 29: Ice Factory.
The camp includes field trip transportation and admission and afternoon snacks. The field trips are open to all students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The students must bring a bagged lunch each day. The fees are $25 per child per day or $65 per week.
The registration deadline for the field trips is Dec. 16.
Space is limited and parents are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible. Register at the Oak Street Park Community Center, 717 N. Palm Ave., Kissimmee.
Festival of Lights parade
The department also invites the public to get a front row seat at the Festival of Lights Parade. The downtown streets of Kissimmee will be transformed into a “North Pole Fantasy” on Saturday at 6 p.m.
VIP seating will be available at the Kissimmee Civic Center for $3 per person. All other seating will be along the surrounding sidewalks. Due to safety concerns, sitting in the median will not be permitted.
In order to accommodate the parade, several roads will be closed from 4 to about 8 p.m. Most public parking areas in the downtown area will be blocked off during the parade; the public is encouraged to park at Kissimmee City Hall.

Rooney named employee of the month
The city of Kissimmee recently recognized John Rooney, the training coordinator at the Kissimmee Fire Department, as the Employee of the Month for December.
Rooney has been employed with the city for more than four years. According to a city press release, Rooney interacts with each member of the department and has garnered the respect and admiration of his co-workers. Additionally, he trains each recruit, giving him or her the personal guidance and leadership required to help them to quickly adapt to the job and fire department.
Rooney continually exceeds expectations and goes above and beyond his job description on a daily basis, city officials said. He most recently invested extra time and effort into processing more than 230 firefighter applications in a short amount of time. He often takes on projects outside the scope of his regular duties and is willing to work the hours needed to get this and his regular tasks done. He participates in the department’s public education outreach and also assisted with the grand opening of Station 11.
Rooney has a great work ethic, the press release stated. That is accompanied by an easy going temperament and good sense of humor. He is quick to recognize or assist a fellow employee. He is all about the team and it shows in how his actions help the members of the department to bond and become a stronger unit.
