Fernando L. Vega, the Lynx bus driver that hit and killed 10-year-old Matthew Robinson of Kissimmee Nov. 4, was at fault in the crash according to a completed Kissimmee Police Department investigation.

After toxicology reports revealed that Vega, 63, did not have drugs or alcohol in his system, he was issued a moving traffic violation citation for failure to yield the right-of-way.

“Pretty much our case is closed,” Stacie Miller, KPD public information officer, said. “Now it’s a civil matter.”

On Nov. 4, at approximately 7 p.m., Matthew and his 12-year-old brother, Mark Robinson, were attempting to cross Columbia Avenue at Dyer Boulevard in Kissimmee when they were hit by the bus. Matthew died at the scene.

Family spokesman Jeremy Markman said while the family is happy the department found Vega at fault for the accident, they are still waiting to hear from Lynx to “make the situation right.”

“Lynx has had plenty of time to complete their internal investigation. (The citation) is certainly not enough to do justice in this case,” he said. “Certainly, the family doesn’t want to go through a lengthy litigation.”

According to Matt Friedman, manager of media relations for Lynx, Vega was still on administrative leave Tuesday pending the results of its internal investigation, of which information from the police department’s investigation would be included.

“We’ll fully follow our guidelines to finish our investigation,” he said.
