The St. Cloud Police Department is committed to the education and enforcement of pedestrian safety. One of the department’s goals is to avoid pedestrian injuries and fatalities within the community.
“Pedestrians should never assume that a driver will do what is right and required by law,” Police Chief Pete Gauntlett said. “Drivers and pedestrians are both responsible for pedestrian safety at all times; both should constantly be on high alert. We have seen an increase in pedestrian injuries and fatalities within our region and we all need to be more focused on everyone’s safety.”
The police department offered the following reminders for pedestrians and drivers:
Pedestrians
• Walk on a sidewalk whenever possible. If no sidewalk is available, always walk toward the traffic and stay vigilant the entire time.
• Always cross a road at the intersection.
• Always use the crosswalk and look every way (left, right, and left and right again) to ensure no vehicle is approaching the crosswalk.
• When crossing a road, ensure you are not in a driver’s blind spot; if a pedestrian cannot see the driver, the driver will not see the pedestrian.
• At nighttime, wear light colors and carry a flashlight.
• Children should never cross a road by themselves.
Drivers
• Share the road.
• Be extra cautious at intersections.
• Always ensure crosswalks are clear before proceeding.
