The Technical Education Center Osceola has received certification by the American Culinary Federation, the largest professional chefs organization in North America, as Osceola County's only practical testing site.
All chefs who desire professional certification from the ACF are required to take and pass a three-hour practical cooking exam which covers all areas of culinary knowledge. This certification was awarded to TECO for its accountability and credibility; high level of professionalism; up-to-date current practices; and high standards in its culinary arts program.
The Commercial Foods and Culinary Arts Program at TECO prepares students for employment in restaurants, hotels and resorts as cooks and provides additional training for those who wish to upgrade culinary and management skills necessary for becoming chefs. The program includes the following major areas of training: food preparation and serving; baking; identification; storage selection and presentation of a wide variety of foods; communication skills; leadership skills; human relations; safe and efficient work practices; use and maintenance of commercial food service equipment; food purchasing and costing; employability skills; entrepreneurship; and ACF courses in sanitation, nutrition, supervision, and management.
This program is competency-based and includes laboratory (kitchen) activities that are integral parts providing instruction in the use of tools, equipment, materials and processes found in the food service industry.
Additionally, this program articulates with Valencia Community College and Johnson & Wales University.
