Cross country teams from St. Cloud and Harmony, and individuals from Liberty and Celebration will compete Saturday morning at the Class 3A state cross country meet at Dade City’s Little Everglades Ranch.
St. Cloud’s surprisingly strong girls team (73) was the runner-up to Oviedo (63) at the 3A-4 regional last Saturday at Stuart South Fork.
The St. Cloud boys (122) were third, one point behind runner-up Pembroke Pines Charter. Belen Jesuit Prep (23) won the championship.
Harmony’s girls (90) placed third at the 3A-4 regional.
Qualifying as individuals were Celebration’s Quincy O’Connor (4th, 16:19), Harmony’s Matt Henning (6th, 16:29) and Liberty’s Robbie Johnroe (13th, 16:45).
The top six teams and 15 individuals advanced to the state meet.
Gateway’s boys (13th) and girls (14th) did not advance from the 4A-1 regional at DeLand.
St. Cloud’s Ashlyn Stadtlander (2nd, 20:21), Anaya Reid (3rd, 20:27) and Katelyn Stadtlander (4th, 20:27) led the Lady Bulldogs in a performance that surprised and pleased Coach Kevin Harkema.
“The regional meet went great. Did not see a 2-3-4 race coming. I knew we were capable, but that was awesome,” Harkema said.
Rebecca Davis (25th, 21:47) and Taylor Wassum (39th, 22:25) also scored for St. Cloud.
“Rebecca ran a personal best, and Taylor Wassum did great,” Harkema said.
The Bulldogs boys team was solid with Bailey Morgan (12th, 16:55), Matt Cole (15th, 17:25), Antonio Montalvo (22nd, 17:51), Sean Wood (32nd, 18:04), Eric Ratliff (42nd, 18:30), Carlos Perez (43rd, 18:33) and Ralphy Hernandez (75th, 19:47).
Harkema thinks the boys will improve at Dade City.
“We struggled a little bit, but I am confident we will run well at the state meet,” Harkema said. “These kids have been working so hard so they deserve it.”
Harmony’s girls were paced by Sam Travis (7th, 20:32), followed by Chelsea Connor (15th, 21:01), Kylie Koral (16th, 21:03), Brittany Connor (17th, 21:03.6), Kristle Ward (35th, 22:21), Brianna Stacey (52nd, 23:36) and Liane Montalvo (68th, 25:35).
“The girls are excited about states and I am hoping to get them all to PR (personal record),” Coach Debra Schweiger said. “We have a lot of seniors, so this is it for them. Hopefully, they can go out with a bang. The girls have the talent to place in the top 10. It just depends on  how bad they want it.”
