A season that began with promise for Harmony High School ended with a 42-21 loss to Melbourne Central Catholic on Friday.
The Hustlers completed their second straight 10-0 regular season and will host Jacksonville Providence Friday in the Class A regional playoffs.
Meanwhile, the Longhorns, who played Friday without six injured offensive starters, dropped their final five games of the season after winning four of their first five, scoring over 40 points in each victory. Harmony last made the playoffs in 2007, when it reached the Class 3A regional final.
“We played our toughest games at the end of the season, when we were riddled with injuries. It’s not a good combo,” HHS Coach Dayne Brown said. “But our kids never pointed fingers or made excuses. I’m proud of them and their effort. You wish the results could have been different for them.”
Harmony was done in almost singlehandedly by MCC’s Rashawn Scott, who scored four first-half touchdowns, two on receptions and two on fumble returns. Quarterback Matt Erdman passed for 260 yards and also ran for a score.
“That kid (Scott), he’s awesome. I know he’s got more than one Division I offer,” Brown said.
The Longhorns stayed in it and trailed 28-14 early in third quarter thanks to 1- and 3-yard touchdown runs by quarterback Adam Harvey, who later tossed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Phillip Britton in the fourth quarter.
Brown said the score doesn’t reflect the level of effort shown Friday.
“It was actually a good outing by our kids. Adam was the only regular in the backfield. We looked like a M.A.S.H. unit on the sidelines, and I counted so many sophomores and freshmen on the field. The young kids played well and extremely hard and I was proud.”
With starters C.J. Clayton and Christian Acevedo out, sophomore Austin Ocasio became the feature back and ran 17 times for 149 yards, while also playing linebacker where he tallied seven tackles and a sack.
“I’ve enjoyed watching him develop, and because of him and guys like him, our future is bright,” Brown said of Ocasio.
Senior middle linebacker Alex Githens forced a fumble and led the team (again) with 18 tackles and his season total of 163 led the county. Brown said he was the team’s top defensive player and played that way consistently in every game.
“I don’t remember ever coaching a guy who had that dominant a year on defense. He was a match for all of our opponents. And in the last two games, we had to ask him to play offense because we needed him with all the injuries.”
Poinciana wrapped up the season Friday at Agape Christian, where it lost 46-0 to conclude a winless (0-10) campaign under first-year coach Michael Timpson.
