The Central Florida Community Breadbasket officially re-opened its food distribution facility and community center Nov. 12 in Intercession City after receiving an extreme makeover-style rebuild with the help of 14 businesses.
The Breadbasket is a nonprofit food bank that assists more than 1,200 needy families per day in Osceola, Orange and Polk counties. The upgraded facility will be open in time to handle increased needs for food assistance during the upcoming holiday season. It will also provide space to expand the Breadbasket’s youth and senior outreach programs and other community programs.
The new facility was donated by 14 businesses involved with constructing a new power generating unit at the Cane Island Power Park. Zachry Industrial Inc. led the initiative, which included volunteers and donations from American Waste, Cemex, Crane Rental, Florida Municipal Power Agency, Kissimmee Utility Authority, Hendrick’s Electrical & Construction, Lin Scott Plumbing, Michael A. Romack Building Contractors, Modspace, Robert’s Mobile Home, Siles & Sons, Southern Waste and United Rental. Osceola County government also provided assistance.
Giving back to the community has been an essential part of the power plant project known as Cane Island Unit 4, according to Chris Gent, spokesman for KUA. The co-owners and contractors have contributed to the community through charitable giving and volunteerism, as well as impacting the local economy through construction spending.
Construction created up to 300 jobs at peak employment with total wages exceeding $42 million, Gent stated in a press release.
“Spending on construction also benefited the local and regional economies and indirectly created more than 300 additional jobs in the region,” Gent stated. “Earnings indirectly created by construction are projected to total more than $35 million.”
