Using one cell phone to call a missing cell phone led to the arrest of a Kissimmee man for grand theft.
At approximately 2 a.m. on Nov. 7, Kissimmee Police Department officers responded to 1023 Palmway St., Kissimmee, in reference to a grand theft. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the victim, who said he believed a neighbor, Glenn Hamilton, 47, had stolen a Sprint cell phone.
The victim explained to the officers that Hamilton had been invited to visit the victim’s home. When the victim and another person told Hamilton they were leaving to go to the store, Hamilton left the residence in a green Ford Expedition.
The victim was not able to locate his cell phone so he called the phone from another phone. The phone answered and he could hear Hamilton’s voice in the background, stating he was in possession of a “hot” phone and he needed to sell it or trade it.
While officers were with the victim, they were able to listen to Hamilton on the victim’s phone through the other phone. The officer received an approximate location of the cell phone and sent another officer to see if he could locate the suspect’s vehicle in the area, which the officer was able to do.
When the suspect violated a traffic law, the officer conducted a traffic stop. The officer who was with the victim asked the officer conducting the traffic stop to activate his air horn to see if it could be heard on the phone, indicating police had the suspect who stole the cell phone. The officer could hear the air horn and Hamilton was detained while the victim was brought to the area to positively identify Hamilton and the missing cell phone.
Hamilton was charged with grand theft for taking the cell phone and with obstruction of justice for giving the officer false identification.
