Tourist taxes for fiscal year fell 1.4 percent
Osceola County’s tourist development tax revenue climbed 9 percent in September compared to the same month a year earlier, following a 7.4 percent increase in August and a 11.1 percent jump in July, according to the latest report from the Osceola County Tax Collector’s office.
Tax revenue for the 2009-10 fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30, was down 1.4 percent compared to last year, mainly the result of hefty drops in October and January of the fiscal year.
The average daily room rate in September was down 5.2 percent – at $65.20 this year versus $68.76 last year for the same month. The hotel/motel occupancy rate for the month was up 0.8 percent, climbing to 35.5 percent this year compared to 35.2 percent last year. The occupancy and average daily room rates do not include Disney properties.
About $2.15 million was collected in tourist taxes in September compared to $1.97 million last year. The county collected about $30.75 million for the fiscal year. County officials said this September was the best September ever in terms of revenue.
Osceola County collects a 6 percent tax on overnight stays of 180 days or less.
The tax collector also reported sales tax receipts for August compared to the same month the prior year, based on a report from the Florida Department of Revenue. Those results are:
• Lunchrooms, restaurants and catering services, up 0.3 percent.
• Hotel/motel accommodations, up 3.4 percent.
• Gifts, cards, novelty, hobby, crafts and toy stores, down 3.5 percent.
• Admissions, amusement and recreation services, up 4.3 percent.
