St. Cloud Mayor Donna Hart presided over her last regular City Council meeting Oct. 28 at City Hall. Seat 1 was up for election Tuesday and Hart did not run for re-election.
Although a “regular council meeting,” the Oct. 28 meeting was anything but business as usual. During the meeting, Deputy Mayor Tom Griffin presented an unsuspecting Hart with an inscribed gavel and plaque on behalf of council and staff for her service to the city.
During her four-and-a-half-year tenure as mayor, Hart presided over 112 regular and special City Council meetings, cast more than 1,350 votes and attended countless community events representing her constituents.
“It has been an honor to serve this great city,” an emotional Hart said. “I’m excited, but I’m also sad at the same time. I can say that I have truly enjoyed serving the citizens of St. Cloud and my terms in office have been enjoyable and fulfilling. I am very proud of the city’s accomplishments during my tenure, including better water quality for our citizens, our new wastewater plant, the completion of the retention ponds at the lakefront, the ‘Dakota Ditch’ project, Nolte Road and maintaining public safety.”
Hart, who also thanked the residents, city employees, management staff and present and former council members, was first elected as St. Cloud’s mayor March 21, 2006, and then again Jan. 29, 2008. She said she will be an active citizen and continue to dedicate time to her community, but she will be more focused on spending quality time with her family.
Seat 1, seat 2 and seat 3 were all up for election Tuesday. A swearing-in ceremony for all three will be held during a special council meeting Nov. 12 at noon in Council Chambers. If a run-off election is necessary, elections will be held Tuesday, Dec. 7, and a swearing-in ceremony would be Thursday, Dec. 16, at noon in Council Chambers, if necessary.
