Income taxes

To the editor:

No person reading this has ever lived in these United States under a federal tax system other than our present “income tax system.”

There is another way, and indeed a better way, to fund the federal government with the revenue required to keep the country running.

I challenge anyone, including the person or persons responsible for publishing or not publishing this letter, to actually study H.R. 25 The FairTax Act and present facts showing that retaining the present income tax system would be better for the citizens of this country.

Think about how to answer these questions:

1. What do you find good about the Internal Revenue Service?

2. Business owners, what would you do with the money you now send to the IRS, which you would retain under the FairTax?

3. Working people, what would you do with the money deducted from your paycheck that you would retain under the FairTax?

If this letter has sparked an interest, go to Google and view these two videos “Imagine the FairTax” and “The FairTax It’s Time.”

This country is in very bad shape and our politicians have caused it to be this way. We the citizens can change our government, which is the beauty of our government, so get involved and help save this great nation while we still can.

Miers endorsed

To the editor:

With Election Day just around the corner, it is vital for citizens to consider their vote carefully. This is a critical election for Osceola County, both in terms of local initiatives and the open commission seats. Voters in district 4 should look closely at Don Miers for county commissioner.

I have personally worked with Miers over the last decade as a colleague (I am former Osceola County employee) and as a customer. When Miers represented SMG overseeing the operations at Osceola Heritage Park, he was instrumental in the success of the annual Kiwanis Bluegrass Festival. As a member of the Kiwanis Club during those years, I saw firsthand his ability to move a complicated project forward. I have also observed Miers’ personal involvement at numerous county civic endeavors.

While he has served locally in many capacities public, private and civic, his commitment to Osceola County has been consistent over three decades.

Miers’ business background, his broad experience as an Osceola County employee and his deep roots in our community make him a great choice. Please consider Don Miers on Election Day, Nov. 2.

Endorses Horner

To the editor:

I have been involved in local politics for over 30 years and I can say without a doubt that Mike Horner is already the most effective legislator Osceola County has had in my memory. In his brief two years in office, Mike has had a major impact improving transportation, education and economic development.

The top legislative priority for the city of Kissimmee and Osceola County was funding for Hoagland Boulevard. This road is critical to generate business and jobs at and around the Kissimmee Gateway Airport.  Regrettably, it did not look like funding would be available any time soon. Fortunately, Horner pushed hard and got the Florida Department of Transportation to fund the road this year. Horner was also able to persuade the Florida Department of Transportation to fund St. Cloud’s top priority, the widening of U.S. Highway 192 from Aeronautical to Budinger. These roads will help us attract jobs, improve safety and improve travel times for Osceola residents.

Perhaps Horner’s most impressive accomplishment was obtaining $22 million in funding for “Building Four” at the Osceola Valencia Campus. This will expand educational opportunities for Osceola residents and assist employers by training our workforce.

In a tough budget year if you added all of the projects, Mike succeeded in acquiring over $50 million in projects and funding for Kissimmee, St. Cloud and our county. Mike Horner made sure we residents of Osceola County got our fair share, showing effective “let’s get it done” and tireless leadership that we have sometimes historically lacked.

With only two years in office, Horner has already made a major impact. We need his continued leadership. I strongly endorse Mike Horner for re-election to the Florida House.
