With Halloween on the way, the Kissimmee Police Department is providing tips to make the festivities fun and safe for trick-or-treaters and party guests.
Are you taking your children trick-or-treating? If so, below are some simple tips that focus on safety.
• Swords, knives and similar costume accessories should be short, soft and flexible.
• Wear well-fitting masks, costumes and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips and falls.
• Walk in groups. Children should not trick-or-treat alone.  Walking with a trusted adult is best.
• Help drivers see you. Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags. Hold a flashlight to help you see and others see you.
• Only walk on sidewalks or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe.
• Look both ways before crossing the street and use established crosswalks whenever possible.
• Avoid entering a home for treats unless accompanied by a trusted adult.
• All treats should be examined prior to eating them. Look for choking hazards and tampering. Limit the number of treats consumed at one time.
• Eat only commercially wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats unless you know the person well.
For those expecting trick-or-treaters or party guests, KPD offers the following tips:
• Be sure walking areas and stairs are well lit and free of obstacles that could result in falls.
• Keep candle-lit jack-o-lanterns and luminaries away from doorsteps, walkways, landings and curtains. Place them on a sturdy table and keep them out of the reach of pets and small children. Never leave them unattended.
• Remind drivers to watch out for trick-or-treaters and to drive safely.
Additional safety tips and Halloween fun facts can be found on the Kissimmee Police Department’s website at police.kissimmee.org.
“Halloween brings increased pedestrian traffic,” Chief Fran Iwanski said. “We want to ensure that all trick-or-treaters are practicing their crime prevention skills. We remind citizens, if you see something suspicious, say it! Report it to the Kissimmee Police Department.”
