On Oct. 11, Osceola County Master Gardener President Mildred Bradley handed over a check for more than $3,500 to Osceola Education Foundation Osceola County CEO Kathy Carr.
The check was earmarked for the Master Gardener Horticultural Scholarship Endowment Fund. The money represented $1,129.11 of profit from the organization’s melaleuca mulch sales over the past year, in addition to a special assessment of $2,500 voted by the members from their general fund.
The Master Gardeners began the fund five years ago to celebrate their 25th year of operation in Osceola County with an initial deposit of $7,000. In addition to contributing to the fund, the Master Gardeners also fund an annual $1,000 horticultural scholarship for an Osceola County high school graduate. The group’s goal is to “grow” the fund to the point that it can become self-regenerating while also paying for the annual scholarship.
To fund the contributions, three years ago the Master Gardeners became the local distributor for melaleuca mulch, a specialty product not available elsewhere in Osceola County until they began marketing it. Normally only available during their twice-a-year plant sales, members also reached out to local nurseries and retailers to stock it year-round. Currently, Vander Pol’s Nursery in Narcoossee and Kissimmee Valley Feed and Ranch Supply in St. Cloud carry the product in stock. The next Master Gardener Plant Sale will be Oct. 29-30, behind the KVLS building in Heritage Park.
The Master Gardener program is sponsored by the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Science as part of the Osceola County Extension Office in Osceola Heritage Park, 1921 Kissimmee Valley Road, Kissimmee.
In addition to the plant sales, Master Gardeners also are available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Plant Clinic in the Extension Office to answer residents’ questions about gardening, landscaping, plant and/or pest identification, etc.
