The city of Kissimmee recently announced the employee of the month for October is Jody Kirkendall.
Kirkendall returned to the city a little more than a year ago as a sanitation foreman in the Public Works Department. For the past 10 months, he has been the acting sanitation superintendent. In total, Kirkendall has more than 19 years of service to the city, leaving for a short period to operate a family-owned business.
According to a city press release, Kirkendall has managed multiple roles in a professional and efficient manner. He has obtained advanced certifications from the Solid Waste Association of North America and continues to work on obtaining additional certifications. This training, combined with his previous experience as a route driver and service technician, allows Kirkendall to understand both the administrative and operational sides of the Sanitation Division.
As acting superintendent, he prepares the budget, assists with equipment purchases, including the acquisition of five new trucks and he prepared a feasibility study relating to the city’s solid waste franchise agreement. He also restructured the collection routes, worked with Kissimmee Utility Authority to resolve commercial collection issues and assisted with the upcoming curbside recycling program.
Kirkendall always welcomes a challenge, city officials said. He works with residents and commercial customers to provide the best service possible – often staying after hours or on weekends if necessary. He approaches this with a great sense of humor, which helps to boost the team’s morale, the press release stated. Additionally, the route drivers and office staff appreciate Jody’s guidance when they experience work-related issues.
He has done much to improve and streamline the Sanitation Division within a short period of time, city officials said.
