Osceola County School District's 21st CCLC SPIRIT Afterschool program will sponsor a districtwide Lights On Afterschool Luau event Thursday, Oct. 21, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Gateway High School, 93 Panther Paws Trail in Kissimmee.
The event, being held in support of afterschool programs, will be one of thousands of such events around the nation as part of the ninth annual Lights On Afterschool celebration, organized by the After school Alliance. Speakers in Osceola County will call for expanding afterschool opportunities so that every child who needs a program has access to one, and discuss the harm that results from budget cuts and freezes.
The event will highlight three of the significant contributions that afterschool programs make to Osceola County: keeping kids safe and healthy; inspiring them to learn; and relieving working parents of worries about their children's activities during the afternoon hours.
Participants in the Lights On Afterschool Luau will participate in several activities and competitions, including a variety of dance drills, trivia games, hula-hoop contests, student performances, cook-offs and more. Approximately 750 student afterschool participants and supporters will be in attendance from the following schools: St. Cloud Middle, Narcoossee Middle, Liberty High, Osceola High, Celebration High and Poinciana High. Community representatives are invited to attend the Luau to show their commitment to afterschool programs.
More information on Lights On Afterschool is available at http://www.after schoolalliance.org/myCommunityFind.cfm and the district's 21st CCLC website at http://www.osceola.k12.fl.us/depts/AfterSchoolPrograms/default.asp.
