The first day of November is not only the day when trick-or-treaters have bellyaches, and moms pick up candy wrappers. It is the day all over the United States when students’ essays are due to the local VFW Post for the VFW Scholarship Essay Contest.
Patriot’s Pen is the scholarship essay contest for grades 6-8. Voice of Democracy is the scholarship contest for grades 9-12. Winners from each local post are forwarded to district contests, then to state contests before going to the VFW national contest.
At each level of competition, scholarship money is awarded.  At the national level, winners and parents are flown to Washington, D.C.
Commander John Lasky, of VFW Post 3227, of St. Cloud, and his co-chairperson, Carolyn Lasky, visited each school with appropriate grade-level students in St. Cloud, Harmony and Narcoossee. They met with various staff members who gave them the entry forms and discussed the programs. They also visited public, parochial and charter schools. Homeschool students also are eligible to enter the contest.
“The staff was very excited for the opportunity this program presents for students,” John Lasky said.
There is still time to enter the contest. Call Lasky at VFW Post 3227 and ask for an entry form.
Students must have their entries turned in on or before Nov. 1. Turn them in to VFW Post 3227 on New York Avenue, St. Cloud.
