UCP is celebrating the importance of reading with its annual Book Buds event from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. today. More than 100 community and business leaders as well as elected officials will volunteer to read and interact with the children at UCP’s six campuses including downtown Orlando, East Orlando adjacent to UCF, Lake Mary, Kissimmee, Pine Hills and Winter Garden.
“It is important to realize that reading to children at an early age builds the foundation for future academic and life successes,” Ilene Wilkins, UCP of Central Florida’s president and CEO, said. “Reading is an important part of UCP’s daily curriculum, but Book Buds offers a unique opportunity to bring volunteers into the classroom and further emphasize the benefits of reading in a fun and interactive way.”
Scholastic Book Fairs will donate a book for every child at UCP as well as a supply for each campus location to help the students continue building their reading skills. Children at UCP will also receive a complimentary Read-a-Book certificate, which entitles them to a free kid’s meal at participating Subway locations in Central Florida.
