Kissimmee Police Department Capt. James Napier spent time Sept. 28 educating more than 200 local high school teens on two troublesome topics: sexting and cyber-bullying.
Starting with sexting, Napier laid out the consequences.
“Most of the students were not aware that they could be charged with possession, distribution or manufacturing child pornography when they engage in sexting. The statistics show that one in every four teens has participated in sexting,” Napier said.
The presentation, though comical at times, gave a dose of reality, a KPD press release stated. Napier explained that a boyfriend/ girlfriend today could be an enemy tomorrow and any pictures sent can be resent to other people. He referenced a case in Florida where a teenage girl committed suicide because a boy she sent explicit pictures of herself to sent the pictures to others at her school.
Napier also discussed bullying with the students. He said that more than 88 percent of students have witnessed bullying.  He gave intervention tips to help stop the bullying.
“Just say, ‘Hey, man, why you picking on him? Let’s go over here,” he told the teens. “Everyone can do that. Studies show that bullying stops within 10 seconds of someone intervening.”
Napier also mentioned the SpeakOut program and gave SpeakOut stickers to the students. The SpeakOut Hotline was created to give students, adults and law enforcement a voice in the fight against school violence and juvenile criminal activity and the tipster can remain anonymous. SpeakOut gives the student an option to text his or her tip to the hotline as well.
