Harmony’s 14-7 loss to Osceola on Friday may have wrecked some egos, but it did little to diminish the Longhorns’ plans.
Coach Dayne Brown’s squad can keep its playoff hopes intact with a win Friday at home against Poinciana.
Last week’s loss was Harmony’s first of the season.
“You win some, you lose some, either way it’s over with,” he said. “It came down to that they played harder in the second half than we did.”
Quarterback Adam Harvey hit tight end Brad Foulke on a 32-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to give the visiting Longhorns a 7-0 lead they’d take into halftime, but that play accounted for one-sixth of Harmony’s 189 offensive yards. Harvey led Harmony on an 84-yard drive in the second quarter, converting a pair of third down plays with a pass and a run, before he was stopped at the OHS 1 on fourth down.
“Osceola did a great job. Their defensive line beat us to the punch a few times,” Brown said. “Offensively we limited ourselves, and couldn’t do some of the things we should be able to do. We played well in some facets of the game, but not enough of them to win.”
Senior C.J. Clayton (23 carries, 115 yards) had another solid night for the Longhorns, 3-1, who had averaged nearly 50 points per game in three early-season routs. His usual backfield mate, Christian Acevedo, played on an injured ankle. His availability was unknown for Friday.
On defense, linebacker Alex Githens had 20 tackles (13 solo).
Poinciana, 0-4, is looking for its first win after a 49-44 loss to Florida Air.
“We just have to be more consistent,” Coach Michael Timpson said. “We made some plays last week, but you also have to stop somebody, and that we didn’t do.”
Quarterback Michael Cirino scored two touchdowns and passed for another to Miquel Ortiz for the Eagles. Ronnie Hill ran for a score and Joey Decomo returned a kickoff for a touchdown.
Brown said Poinciana is improving.
“Just by looking at them and seeing their scores, it sounds like they’re playing a lot better,” he said. “This is a big game for us. We have to be 2-0 in the district with what’s ahead of us.”
After a non-district game at Bishop Moore next week, Harmony plays consecutive games against district foes East River, Edgewater and St. Cloud.
Poinciana has not beaten Harmony since 2004, the Longhorns’ inaugural season.
“Harmony has some talented people. We’ve got to play better than we’ve been to be successful,” Timpson said.
