Gateway’s looking for its first district victory since 2006. Celebration’s never had one. They go on the road Friday to try to buck the trend.
The Panthers (1-3), after their bye week, head to Freedom Friday at 7:30 p.m. for a 6A District 6 tilt. Coach Marlin Roberts’ team hopes to snap a three-game losing streak, a tall order against the 5-0 Patriots, who beat University, 31-21, last week.
Panthers quarterback Roger Allen twisted his ankle a month ago against Harmony, but is finally full strength. He’ll help bolster an offense that’s scored just 10 points since beating Poinciana, 36-35, to open the season.
“I’d say he’s at least 90 percent,” Roberts said. “He went through practice OK; he didn’t say too much about it this week.”
He’ll be tested against a stingy Freedom defense.
“They have a great defense, they’re always in position to make plays,” Roberts said. “Their defensive line is good, they come after you.
“On offense, they like to spread it out, although they may just give it to their big running back (Austin Gamble) and see if we can stop him.”
The Storm (2-3) head to Lakeland Tenoroc on Friday at 7 p.m. after making crucial mistakes in a 30-23 loss to Auburndale last week in 3A District 9 play, errors that Coach Ben Aarestad said turned the tide of the game.
“We had four turnovers in the first half, and we were only down three points despite playing as bad as possible,” he said. “In the fourth quarter we had the ball two times to try to tie but we didn’t do enough good things to string together a drive. It was the worst these kids have felt all year.”
During that fourth quarter, starting quarterback Miguel Torres-Bruno hurt his throwing shoulder and is out for this week, and possibly beyond.
“I don’t know how bad it is yet,” Aarestad said Tuesday. “He won’t play Friday.”
Brandon Archambeau rushed for 133 yards on 19 carries, including first-half touchdown runs of 21 and 31 yards. Celebration led 14-9 after Tyler Osorio (six catches, 125 yards) hauled in a 67-yard pass from Torres-Bruno early in the second quarter.
Osorio, Archambeau and sophomore William Santry will take snaps at quarterback this week against the 1-3 Titans, a team that the Storm match up well against.
“We have a size advantage up front,” he said. “If we play well, we can win, but we have to do things right ourselves.”
