Four Osceola County School District teachers and 18 students have been selected for their excellence in math and science education for the 2009-10 school year.
The teachers were selected as outstanding science or math teachers at the elementary and secondary levels based upon their involvement with academic competitions and fairs, teaching strategies and leadership qualities through professional development.
The students were chosen as either outstanding students in science or math or as most improved students in science or math based upon their involvement with academic competitions and fairs, grade-point averages, and teacher recommendations.
PRISM student and teacher award winners:
7th-grade students
Outstanding math: John Carlo Nuguid, Celebration K-8 School, and Peyton Floyd, Horizon Middle School.
Outstanding science: Alexander Muralles, Harmony Community School, and Christopher Donis, Neptune Middle School.
Most improved math: Brianna Bolen, Harmony Community School, and Yasmary Ozuna, Bellalago Academy.
Most improved science: Nicholas Price, Harmony Community School, and Cristian Rivera, Kissimmee Middle School.
Sustaining scholars
Ninth grade: Allen Pierre, Osceola High School; Brett Graham, Celebration High School; Parker Merritt, St. Cloud High School; Elitza Rodriguez, Professional and Technical High School (PATHS); and Justin Baba,  Gateway High School.
10th grade: Brandon Tuxbury, Osceola High School; Bryce Hayes, Professional and Technical High School (PATHS); Robin Schiro, Gateway High School; Gabriella Montalvo, Celebration High School; and Lillian Condori, Professional and Technical High School (PATHS).
Teachers
Elementary math, Carol Hamilton, Pleasant Hill Elementary School; elementary science, Diana Hauser, Michigan Avenue Elementary School; secondary math, Annamarie Grellar, Neptune Middle School; and secondary science, Arlene Colon-Cuellar, Harmony Community School
Through the PRISM Project, the Osceola County School District has joined with nine other school districts in Central Florida to build a plan with performance measures to strengthen math and science education in the region.
