In July 2009, the Florida State Board of Education approved the 2009-10 Strategies and Support for the Differential and Accountability model. Under the model matrix, school districts were charged with the responsibility of developing, with their unions, a plan to attract and retain high-performing teachers to low-performing schools. Performance incentive pay is given to teachers whose students obtained the learning goals set by the state.
The Osceola County School District awarded $1,500 performance pay bonuses to several outstanding teachers. Liberty High School had two math teachers who earned this award — Fulvio Paula and Kent Seaman. Poinciana High School’s outstanding teachers are Samuel Diaz, Brian Farwell, Mary McDowell, Daniel Oakes and Rebecca Proko for math. Steven Virkler was honored for science. Congratulations to these dedicated and exemplary teachers.
The performance agreement between the Osceola County School Board and the Osceola County Teachers Association will be reviewed again this year as a part of the Race to the Top proposal.

The Poinciana Family Y, a much-needed establishment in our community, is a nonprofit organization that relies on fundraising and donations. During these difficult financial times, large corporations are unable to contribute as they had before. The Poinciana Y has found a creative way to raise funds.
Local businesses have donated their services to be raffled off at the Hispanic Heritage Festival Sunday, Oct. 17, at Vance Harmon Park. There are four great prizes offered for a $1 raffle ticket.
Horseworld Riding Stables, on Poinciana Boulevard, has donated four trail rides. Regions Bank Poinciana has donated the signature green bike. Stonegate Golf at Solivita has donated a golf four-ply package. Pleasant Hill Family Chiropractic contributed a gift basket that includes a massage and other goodies. Poinciana’s own Slice of New York on Cypress Parkway has given the Y $40 in gift certificates to raffle. These businesses deserve your patronage.
Buy a dollar ticket or buy a few. You will be helping the Y and in return may win a great prize. Tickets may be bought at the Poinciana Family YMCA, Marigold Avenue, the Association of Poinciana Villages on Walnut Avenue or Regions Bank, Cypress Parkway. Take a chance — you may win a great prize in your own backyard.
