What can you do?
That was the theme of the 2010 Community Talk Prayer Breakfast presented Sept. 4 by the Power Praise Connection Ministries, a Kissimmee faith-based organization working to deal with social issues in the community.
The event brought churches and community figureheads to a Heritage Park Inn conference room to talk about a number of challenges affecting the area.
‘‘ ‘What can you do?’ That was the main theme of the whole thing,” Evangelist Rupert D. Henry, founder and director of Power Praise, said.
A panel made up of community leaders discussed concerns and issues. Teen pregnancy, domestic violence, the poor economy affecting families and the foster care system were just some items that made the list.
“We had a wide range of conversations,” Henry said.
So what was the end result on the prayer breakfast? The local Christian churches needed to come together as one to offer help, Henry said.
“We just can't rely on the government to do it,” Henry said. “We need to create opportunities to help each other.”
There are untapped resources the church community has, such as food banks, counseling and schools that people don't know about, Henry said.
“Our churches are a key part of our community,” said former Kissimmee city manager Mark Durbin, who spoke as a panelist at the breakfast.
Every third Saturday of the month, Power Praise hosts an event called Prayer in the City at Toho Square in downtown Kissimmee, where area church members come out to worship. Henry envisioned using one of those events to gather local Christian churches at the square so people can come out and take advantage of the resources the local worship centers have to offer.
“We want to get the word out,” Henry said.
But the first step would be to get those churches on board. Church leaders who want to take part in such an event should e-mail Power Praise at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
“There is a lot of work to be done in the community,” Durbin said.
