In conjunction with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration and local law enforcement agencies, the Osceola County Sheriff's Office Saturday will participate in a program to remove potentially dangerous prescription drugs from homes.
According to a Sheriff's Office press release, the initiative provides an opportunity for residents to safely turn over expired, unwanted or unused pharmaceutical controlled substances or other medications to law enforcement for destruction.
This one-day effort brings national attention to the issue of pharmaceutical controlled substance abuse, Sheriff's Office officials said. The 2008 National Survey on Drug Use and Health estimated there were 6.2 million current non-medical users of psychotherapeutic drugs in the United States.
The program is completely anonymous and free, the press release stated. Residents who have unwanted prescription drugs can drop them off at two sites in Osceola County: Publix, 841 Cypress Parkway Boulevard, Poinciana, and Publix, 1951 S. Narcoossee Road, in St. Cloud. Both locations will have deputies available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
All solid dosage pharmaceutical products and liquids in consumer containers will be accepted. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in the original containers with the cap tightly sealed to prevent leakage. Intravenous solutions, injectables and syringes will not be accepted due to potential hazards.
