Hot of the heels of another great year at the Emmy’s, HBO will be releasing Bored to Death: The Complete First Season on Blu-ray/ DVD Sept. 21.

The show deservedly won an Emmy for its great opening title sequence, but that is just one of the pleasures of this fantasy/comedy based on the semi-autobiographical writings of author Jonathan Ames.

Starring Jonathan Schwartzman as Ames and filmed on location in New York City, the story has a bit of a Woody Allen feel as we get hopelessly intangled in the life of the neourotic writer who is still recovering from the breakup with his girlfriend.

A fan of detective noir, Ames decides to moonlight as a private investigator, even though he has absolutely no experience as a P.I., aside from what he has read in books by Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett.

Aiding or causing him even more problems in his life is his boss George (Ted Danson) and best friend Ray (Zach Galifianakis of The Hangover).

The humor here is mostly subtle, but sometimes it can also be downright funny.

Get the Blu-ray for the sharper picture, but both the Blu-ray and DVD versions include the same bonus features:

Jonathan Ame’s Brooklyn — A guided tour of the show’s eclectic New York City locations.

The Making of Bored To Death — A behind-the-scenes look at the making of the season one, with interviews by cast and crew and author Ames.

Audio commentaries — laugh it up with Ames, Schwartzman and Danson.

Plus there several deleted scenes that didn’t make the final cut of the series.

Season two of Bored to Death comes to HBO Sept. 26 at 10 p.m.

You can catch one of HBO’s big winners Temple Grandin. It received seven Emmy awards – Outstanding Made for Television Movie, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie (Claire Danes), Supporting Actor (David Strathairn), Supporting Actress (Julia Ormond) and Directing (Mick Jackson) in a rebroadcast on the cable channel. It is also available on DVD.

Also coming soon on Blu-ray/DVD is The Pacific, HBO’s award-winning show (best mini-series). It arrives on Blu-ray/DVD Nov. 2.

Also new on Blu-ray/DVD is Heroes Season 4, the final volume of the popular TV series.

The five-disc set (Universal Home Studios Entertainment) includes all 18 episodes from Redemption, the final volume in the series. It all culminates in one final episode Brave New World.

Bonus Blu-ray features include:

BD-Live — Universal’s exclusive access that allows your Internet-connected player for additional content.

Mobile-to-Go — More bonus content that you can save to your mobile device or to stream anywhere there’s a Wi-Fi network.

U-Control — Another Universal exclusive that lets you learn more about the show (including video commentaries from Heroes stars and crew) without leaving the TV series.

Deleted scenes and extended scenes and a featurette with cast and crew in a behind-the-scenes look at the show.

Bonus features on both DVD and Blu-ray include several featurettes; an indepth look at the production process; audio commentaries and a screensaver for your television.

If you like all of your vintage horror in one place, check out Mad Ron’s Prevues from Hell (Virgil Films & Entertainment).

This DVD (release date Sept. 14) was originally released on VHS in 1987 and it looks it. With the look and feel of one of those old creepy guest- hosted Friday night TV Creature Feature’s, it is hosted by a weird assortment of characters in a run-down movie theater.

The 47 films presented in trailer/prevue form include Africa: Blood and Guts (1966); I Dismember Mama (1974); Isla: She Wolf of the S.S. (1975); Three on a Meathook (1972); Night of the Living Dead (1968); The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974); Sisters (1972); Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things (1972); I Drink Your Blood (1970); Two Thousand Maniacs (1964) The Blood Splattered Bride (1972) I Dismember Mama (1974) and Tales from the Crypt (1972).

Great for fans of the genre only.
