More than 6,100 Family, Career and Community Leaders of America members, advisers, alumni, and guests from across the country gathered in Chicago July 4-8 for the group’s 2010 National Leadership Conference to address issues facing youth, and to discuss how to work toward gaining life skills needed to meet those challenges.
With more than half of the students taking part in competitive events, students from St. Cloud High School, with the help of chapter advisor Denise Peeler, brought home the following awards to Osceola County:
Gold medals: Chapter Showcase — Samantha Farmer and Nicole Roeseler; Illustrated Talk on Teen Dating Violence — Tihler Browning and Nova Pena; Life Event Planning for College — Sarah Mannix and Rachel Smith.
Silver medal: National Programs in Action on Traffic Safety — Angelina DiFede and Millie Todd.
The group’s National Outreach Project this year was the Children’s Miracle Network, which raised funds for children’s hospitals and foundations throughout the United States. After taking a tour of Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital, the St. Cloud chapter raised $863 and the leaders group nationwide raised $241,590.
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work and societal issues through family and consumer sciences education.
The national group has more than 200,000 members and 6,500 chapters from 50 state associations, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The organization has involved more than 10 million youth since its founding in 1945.
