Harmony didn’t fare well against a bully – Winter Springs – at the Kickoff Classic last week.
Now it meets a thoroughbred for the regular-season opener Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Lake Nona, where the Longhorns will get a good look at one of the state’s best quarterbacks, Kevin Sousa.
Coach Dayne Brown said his Longhorns were humbled by a physical Winter Springs squad, which won the Kickoff Classic at Longhorn field Friday, 36-6.
“We did a lot of little things wrong, but the thing is, Winter Springs is physically big up front and probably as good as we’re going to see all year,” Brown said. “I told the kids that it really doesn’t matter whether you’re playing a real good team, like Winter Springs, or a really bad team with the mistakes we made. It’s hard to win against anybody when you make those mistakes.”
Two penalties caused Harmony touchdowns to be nullified, one a 90-yard kickoff return by Christian Acevedo in the third quarter and another on a 65-yard run by Anthony Ocasio in the fourth quarter.
Brown is more concerned with the play of his lines, which were unable to match up against the Bears.
“We’re young, we’ve got a lot of kids who are trying hard who made some mistakes,” Brown said. “It isn’t anything we need to fix scheme-wise as much as it is executing the way we should in the scheme that we have.”
Acevedo, who rushed for over 100 yards, scored Harmony’s only touchdown in the third quarter on a 64-yard run.
“I think Christian’s shown that he’s ready to be the guy who steps up to make things happen,” Brown said. “He wants to be the one to do that.”
Horns’ senior quarterback Adam Harvey left the game in the second half after taking a hit. Brown expects him to be in the lineup Friday. Sophomore Ryan Holstein entered in relief, but like Harvey he was pressured by the Bears defense.
Sousa, who has verbally committed to Michigan, is a run-pass threat from the Lions spread attack.
“They do things a little differently than Winter Springs. They aren’t going to line up in two-backs and try to smash mouth. They’ll try to get it to their skill people and make big plays, and their quarterback is very good at that,” Brown said.
The game does not count in the district standings. The Horns host Gateway next week and then have an open date before beginning their district schedule at Liberty.
“Nobody likes a loss, especially a one-sided loss, but after watching the film I felt better about us. A lot of the mistakes we made we can work out,” Brown said.
