Looking at junior Kieron Williams quarterback the Osceola Kowboys Friday in the Kickoff Classic at Lyman, you'd never know it was just his second varsity start running Coach Doug Nichols' flex-bone offense.

OHS was largely efficient, gaining 318 yards in three varsity quarters -- 268 of it on the ground -- as the Kowboys defeated the Greyhounds, 23-7. Williams rushed nine times for 99 yards, and fullback Frank Thomas toted it 15 times for 74 yards and two touchdowns. Williams also was 2-of-5 for 50 yards passing, a pair of 25-yard strikes to Terrence Tatume.

"I thought they played well, early in the season it's sometimes a battle," Nichols said. "Williams is coming along, and he knows he has to keep working at it. But I thought we ran the ball well, threw it well and when we dropped back we had protection."

Osceola started the game by going 78 yards in 12 plays for their first score, a Thomas 19-yard scamper. After the defense forced a three-and-out, the Kowboys answered with a 26-yard Cody Ausherman field goal.

On the first play of the second quarter, Oscar McGee recovered a fumble after a Lyman third-down completion, and Thomas would turn it into points with a one-yard dive. Fourteen minutes into the game, when Osceola had scored 16 points and gained 137 yards, Lyman had run 10 plays and gained 18 yards before Andrew Green broke off a 47-yard run that would lead to a touchdown.

Freshman Scooter Fagan scored on a one-yard run after halftime to cap the scoring.

Osceola reprises it's rivalry with St. Cloud for the 87th time next week at Tom Gannarelli Field to begin the regular season.
