Pat Jones, a curriculum resource teacher at Canoe Creek Charter Academy, has been named Educator of the Year by Charter Schools USA at its annual Summit.
The award is given to an individual who is nominated by peers for his or her professionalism, creativity and overall excellence as an educator. Once nominated, candidates are evaluated by sister schools where winning nominations are sent to the corporate executive team and ultimately the vice-president of education for the final decision.
Jones has been teaching for nine years. Formerly at Four Corners Charter School, she started at Canoe Creek this year when Charter Schools USA took over management of Canoe Creek Charter Academy. She serves as a Teacher Learning Community mentor, Response to Intervention coach and a reading coach. She has participated in a curriculum cadre, provides tutoring and was part of the middle school planning committee.
“Pat does whatever it takes to drive student achievement,” Sherry Hage, vice-president of education at Charter Schools USA, said. “Her continuous use of data ensures that teachers use every minute of instructional time to engage students within their classes. Her compassion for every student and determination to ensure that they succeed is seen in all that she does.”
Jones also is involved with Charter Schools USA’s Leading Edge program that encourages existing employees to take the necessary steps to get promoted from within. By assisting with this growth and development plan for newer teachers, she serves as a mentor in helping others succeed.
Canoe Creek Charter Academy is part of the Charter Schools USA family of schools. It earned an “A” grade on the 2010 Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test during its first year under the management of Charter Schools USA.
