Court vacancy announced
The Ninth Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission has announced one vacancy in the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court resulting from the resignation of Circuit Court Judge R. James Stroker.
Applicants to fill the vacancy must have been members of The Florida Bar for the preceding five years, registered voters and live in the territorial jurisdiction of the court at the time he or she assumes office.
Applications can be downloaded from The Florida Bar’s website (www.floridabar.org) or can be picked up at the office of Michael J. Snure, Chair, 1150 Louisiana Ave., Suite One, Winter Park, FL 32789, or by sending a request to P.O. Box 2728, Winter Park, FL 32790. You also can request an application by calling 407-644-7600.
The deadline for submission of the application is Friday, Sept. 3, at 1 p.m. The submission of a photograph is encouraged. Incomplete applications and applications received after the deadline may not be considered.
Interviews are tentatively scheduled to be conducted Tuesday and/or Wednesday, Sept. 28-29. The location of the interviews is to be determined.
Be alert when school starts
Osceola County schools will open Monday and this means more children will be out on the streets walking or riding bikes to and from school.
The Kissimmee Police De-partment wants to remind drivers to watch for the children and be aware of all school zones.
The speed limit in most school zones is 15 miles per hour. If drivers speed through school zones, they will be subject to enhanced fines and penalties. Drivers also must be aware of crossing guards and yield to the children.
Parents are urged to protect their children when they are going to and from school. If your child will be riding a bike to school, ensure that the child is wearing a bicycle helmet and that it fits properly. Review bicycle safety rules with your children prior to sending them off on Monday morning.
If you will be dropping your child off at school, use the proper drop-off area. Do not make alternate drop-off areas because of long lines. Give yourself a few extra minutes in the morning to drop your child off at the proper location.
Kissimmee police crossing guards also prepared for school by training at the Kissimmee Police Department to ensure they are ready for the students.
“It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure our children are safe on their travels to and from school,” Police Chief Fran Iwanski said. “Take this weekend to review safety tips with your children so they are ready for school Monday morning, and remember to drive safely and watch for children walking, riding bicycles and at bus stops.”
Outdoor Initiative at OHP

Following the session, there will be the general America’s Great Outdoors listening session. Youth are encouraged to stay for the general listening session from 3:30 to 6:30 pm.
To ensure there is sufficient space for everyone, those interested are encouraged to reply to ago.youth@ios.doi.gov by Tuesday.
