Longtime St. Cloud Fire Rescue veteran Bill Johnston has been named St. Cloud’s new fire chief after a monthlong search to replace Charlie Lewis, who retired as chief of the department July 1.
St. Cloud City Manager Tom Hurt named Johnston as the new chief Monday.
“Chief Johnston has been an emergency responder in our city for nearly 25 years,” Hurt said. “He has shown his dedication to our community during this time and he has proven to be a valuable leader as well. I am confident he will continue to serve this city in the most-effective manner and lead his department successfully.”
Johnston, a 47-year-old St. Cloud native who was raised in Kissimmee, has served on the St. Cloud Fire Department for the past 25 years and was an assistant fire chief before being appointed the department’s acting leader by Hurt in July.
Johnson will oversee the department of more than 50 employees.
“Serving this community has been an honor for me for all these years,” Johnston said. “Having the opportunity to ‘rise to the top’ is very unique and I am very grateful for this new opportunity. I will continue to do my best to maintain the wonderful quality of life we enjoy here. We have a great group of people in this department and within the city and I am committed to ensuring that we continue to successfully carry out our duties.”
Johnston has been a member of the fire service since 1983. He rose through the ranks, beginning as a volunteer and working his way up.
During his career with St. Cloud Fire Rescue, Johnston has managed the fire prevention division, emergency medical services division and oversees emergency management for the city.
Johnston has a bachelor’s degree in organizational studies from Eckerd College, with a minor in public administration.
Johnston and his wife of 25 years, Ellen, live just outside St. Cloud. They have three children, Christopher, 28, Christian, 14, and Rayna, 13.
