On Aug. 20, the Kissimmee Police Department, in conjunction with Crimeline, will host a Kicks 4 Guns drop-off location.
The Kicks 4 Guns program encourages residents to drop off unwanted guns to law enforcement with no questions asked. The program was originally designed to encourage residents to trade their unwanted guns for tennis shoes. However, the program has evolved in the past few years. Residents can now trade their guns for $50 gift cards to either Walmart or Target.
The drop-off spot will be at 2211 W. Vine St. Residents are encouraged to drop off the unwanted guns between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. or while gift card supplies last. All firearms should be unloaded and safely secured in a plastic bag and stored in the trunk of your vehicle. As people enter the drop-off spot, they should leave the gun in a vehicle and allow a Kissimmee police officer remove it.
The gift cards are being bought with proceeds from the Kissimmee Police Department’s forfeiture fund, money seized by the Kissimmee Police Department as a result of being connected in the commission of felony crimes.
“We encourage our citizens to drop off their unwanted guns during Kicks 4 Guns,” Chief Fran Iwanski said. “This program is an easy and safe way to dispose of unwanted firearms.”
This is the second year the Kissimmee Police Department has participated in the Kicks 4 Guns program. Last year, Kissimmee police officers collected 77 firearms and two explosive devices.
