Wish Upon a Wedding is the world’s first nonprofit organization dedicated to granting weddings and civil union ceremonies for couples facing life-threatening illnesses.
Launched in January, Wish Upon a Wedding has quickly grown to include 18 chapters nationwide.
The city of Orlando was selected as one of the first five cities for the official launch of Wish Upon a Wedding and the Orlando chapter’s official launch was in May. By calling on a regional database of wedding vendors known as “wish granters,” the organization will be able to grant five types of weddings (from simple to more elaborate), some in as quickly as 48 hours.
The Orlando Chapter will be able to grant wishes within 300 miles of the Orlando area.
According to a press release, Wish Upon a Wedding is trying to provide a chance for couples to enjoy a very special day, without any thoughts of existing health issues, while surrounded by their closest family and friends. Couples can go to www.wishuponawedding.org to complete an application if they are interested in receiving a wedding wish.
“Often a person is too sick to even leave their hospital bed, or they may be in hospice care,” Wish Upon a Wedding founder Liz Guthrie said. “If their last wishes include marrying their partner who stood by them through their most difficult times, we want to help make that dream come true.”
