Judge for yourself

To the editor:

Last Friday night (July 9) I went to the city of Kissimmee’s chambers to watch the Kissimmee-Osceola County Chamber of Commerce debate between local school board incumbents and their challengers. There was one race in particular that I was interested in: incumbent Jay Wheeler and his challenger Nancy Gemskie.

Jay Wheeler once said, “What do I do with all the money I raise? I win elections" and “I'm part P.T. Barnum." Part of that statement was true. During the debate, P.T. Barnum would have been proud of Wheeler waving his campaign fan for attention. He began by boasting about grades and touting the Osceola County School District as one of the best. However, early in the debate during the question-and-answer portion, Wheeler had to repeatedly defend his statements, as many weaknesses of the School District were discussed by his opponent. On the other hand, Nancy Gemskie was professional and answered the questions sincerely and in a businesslike manner.

Why would any parent want Jay Wheeler to be in charge of his or her children when he verbally misleads people and acts like a clown? On the other hand, we saw someone, Nancy Gemskie, who was professional, address real issues such as failing grades, morale and district rankings. She was not afraid to tell the truth, stayed focused and will seek resolve for School District shortcomings.

Yes, Nancy Gemskie is my friend; we have sat on many local boards together, many of which she chaired. This was the first time I saw Nancy in a Q&A debate regarding School District issues. Nancy clearly won my support. I would recommend everyone with cable TV to watch the debate and judge for yourself.

Postal unit closing

To the editor:

The Kissimmee Broadway Post Office at 402 Broadway will be closing Friday, July 23, at 4 p.m. due to the conditions of the economy.

Broadway Post Office could not raise the necessary capitalization to operate the post office to the efficiency or the standards that the residents of Kissimmee require or expect.

We would like to thank all the residents and visitors of Florida for their support and business they have been giving to our post office and candy store in downtown Kissimmee.

Postmaster Randy J. Littlefield Sr. and Postmistress Rebecca L. Littlefield would like to say thank you to all the good people of Kissimmee for your support and friendships that have been developed over the years.

We will continue to search for capitalization to re-establish service to downtown Kissimmee businesses and citizens. Thank you.

Randy J. Littlefield Sr.
